[OC] 63 MVPs in 63 days, part 58: The 2014 MVP race

2020.06.28 18:07 Bipedal-Moose [OC] 63 MVPs in 63 days, part 58: The 2014 MVP race

Hello everyone, and welcome back to part 58 of my series in which I’ll be researching and dissecting every single MVP race in NFL history. Today, we’re going to be looking into the 2014 race. But first, a look at the voting results from you for the 2013 race. 88 people voted, and here are the results:
  1. Peyton Manning: 81/88 votes (92.1%)
  2. Tom Brady: 7/88 votes (8.0%)

2014 AP MVP: Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (31 votes)

Other notable candidates: Houston Texans DE JJ Watt (13 votes)
Others receiving votes: Cowboys QB Tony Romo (2 votes), Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (2 votes), Patriots QB Tom Brady (1 vote), Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner (1 vote)
The winner: Aaron Rodgers joins the multiple MVPs club with his second career MVP win.
The race
Here are the stats for the notable contenders for MVP in 2014. Remember, though, that the context behind the stats is equally as important as the stats themselves, so I encourage you to read the player profiles below.
Rodgers
Comp/Att Yds Y/A TD INT Rate ANY/A Rush-Yds-TDs Fumbles
341/520 4,381 8.4 38 5 112.2 8.7 43-269-2 12
Watt
Sack Int-Yds-TDs FF FR-Yds-TDs TFL QB Hits
20.5 1-80-1 4 5-59-1 29 51
Note: Watt also had 3 receptions for 4 yards and 3 TDs.
Note: Bold indicates a league lead in that particular category. Italics indicate a league record.
The case for and against Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers returned to the top of the QB ranks in 2014 after an injury limited him to 9 starts in 2013. He did it with style: Rodgers ranked 7th in passing yards, 3rd in passing TDs, and 1st in TD-INT differential by a comfortable margin (his +33 differential was 8 better than Tony Romo’s +25). But of course, Rodgers’ elite volume wasn't the most impressive thing about his season: his staple overwhelming efficiency returned as well, as he ranked 1st in ANY/A, by a margin of over half a yard. There are but few arguments to be made against Rodgers as the best QB in the NFL in 2014.
And once again, Rodgers chipped in very good production on the ground. Among QBs, his 269 rushing yards ranked 7th in the league and his 2 rushing TDs ranked T-6th. No QB ahead of Rodgers in either of those two categories had passing numbers that rivaled his. Rodgers’ statistical dominance earned him consensus first team all-pro honors at the QB position for the second time in his career.
The Packers’ team around Rodgers was decent at best, but probably closer to mediocre. Even with Rodgers’ excellent production in rushing, the team ranked 11th in rushing yards and 10th in rushing YPC. The Packers’ defense was once again underwhelming, ranking 18th in points allowed per drive, and the Packers’ offense only had the 13th best average starting field position. Nevertheless, the team ranked 1st in points scored per drive and went 12-4. One year after the team floundered about in Rodgers’ absence, it’s still not difficult to see the effect Rodgers had on the team: he elevated it considerably.
Of course, Rodgers still had his fair share of support on the offensive side. The Packers still had Jordy Nelson at WR, who turned in an elite season, and Randall Cobb also enjoyed what was easily the best season of his career. Rodgers also had an excellent offensive line blocking for him, led by David Bakhtiari and Josh Sitton on the left side. Rodgers posting a career-low sack rate of 5.1% owes no shortage of gratitude to them.
The case for and against Watt
I don’t think it would be all too controversial to say Watt had the most impressive individual performance in 2014. It was nearly superhuman: as a 3-4 DE, Watt finished with 20.5 sacks, 2nd in the league only behind Justin Houston’s 22.0 at an edge rushing position. The next highest mark posted by a 3-4 DE was 9.0 sacks by Vinnie Curry. Watt’s 29 tackles behind the line of scrimmage led the league by a comfortable margin (Houston was the next best at 23), and his 51 QB hits towered over everyone else (next best was Carlos Dunap at 28) and were a new league record (though the stat had only been recorded since 2006). It wasn’t just the stats: Watt clearly passed the eye test. For the second time in his career, he was named AP Defensive Player of the Year, joining exclusive company.
Watt even chipped in on the scoreboard. He joined the Texans’ offense on some goal line packages and came up with 3 TD receptions on 3 catches. He got an 80 yard pick-6 in week 4 against the Bills. He forced 4 fumbles and recovered 5, notching a scoop ‘n score in week 6. He did everything. Watt’s dominance came on a defense that certainly lacked starpower outside of himself (he was the only one with any individual accolades to speak of in 2014), and was given the 17th best average starting field position in the league thanks to a lackluster offense led by Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB, but still ranked 3rd in points allowed per drive and 1st in turnovers forced. It’s no stretch to say this defense wouldn’t be what it was without Watt.
The two biggest issues with Watt’s candidacy are obviously positional value and team success. The two issues are tied together: even with a player as otherworldly as Watt, the Texans missed the playoffs at 9-7. There is a substantial base of voters who believe that the most valuable contributions in the league only happen on playoff teams, and that contributions to non-playoff teams are inherently less valuable. And, of course, it would be doing a disservice to claim that Watt was the only good player on the Texans: the team had solid players like Jonathan Joseph and AJ Bouye in their secondary, and on offense, they had a stellar WR duo in DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson, who, even at his old age, produced a 1,000+ yard pace in his 14 full games; they also had Arian Foster at RB, who was highly productive in his 13 games, with nearly 1,600 scrimmage yards and 13 TDs. Those 3 players all benefited from having a legitimately good offensive line that collectively missed just 1 game and featured the likes of Duane Brown, Chris Meyers, and Brandon Brooks.

2020.02.05 05:55 Rocket_girl_803 I read Jessica Simpson’s book so you won’t have to

Took one for the team. And by “read” I mean I used the search function to find the John parts.
Here’s the gist; Basically, she alleges that he would build her up and then abruptly break up with her (always via email) repeatedly. She has one line where she’s like “did he continue to stab me in the heart or did I just keep running into the dagger he had aimed at me” if that gives you any indication of her feelings on the matter.
She states that when John moved to LA in 2009 to record Battle Studies he started hanging out with her parents a lot. They had been broken up for a few years and she was with Tony Romo, so she was weary of him suddenly being around all the time. Then one night he tells the entire Simpson clan that he’s ready to be a “good man” for her. Shortly after this, Tony Romo finds an email from John in Jessica’s phone and breaks up with her. Jessica almost instantly goes to John’s house. He allegedly tells her “You can’t have me yet.” He then proceeds to play her Battle Studies and tells her that all of the songs are for her. She asked him if none were about Jennifer Anniston (she does not name her in book, but calls her “another girl he had dated”). He replies that he could never get any material from her and Jessica Simpson then accuses him of dumping her over and over purely for songs. Then he gave the infamous interviews and she cut off all contact.
And here’s why her side of the story is bullshit; She paints him in a pretty sadistic light.
Reading between the lines, she had a pretty serious drinking problem and that was the cause of a lot of their break ups (which she even admits at one point), and she says that he hated her drinking, would beg her not to drink at all, and wouldn’t even talk to her on the phone if she was drunk. She was still in love with her ex-husband Nick Lachey, another point of contention (and I’m guessing the inspiration behind the line in Heartbreak Warfare, “drop his name, push it in and twist the knife again”).
She gives all these reasons why their relationship was doomed;
It was mostly long distance and conducted via phone and email; Press interference; Lingering feelings for her ex; Insecurity on her part because she couldn’t keep up with him intellectually; Insecurity on John’s part; She was an alcoholic
But then she contends that he was a sadistic artist that tortured her just to get song inspiration. She also makes several comments about the “secretly intellectual cheerleader” who dates and heals the “band geek”. She also compares the Grammys to prom. I’m guessing this all means that she feels like both of them were very immature at the time.
Oh and after one of their break ups he dedicated the song “Angel” by Aerosmith to her.
Tldr; Jessica is going for the throat, but makes several arguments against her own theory. Two broken people date and continue to repeatedly break each other.

2020.01.27 04:59 displacedindavis Every one-hit-wonder playoff matchup in the NFL (non-Super Bowl)

While some playoff matchups have appeared numerous times over the years, others have appeared just once in NFL history. Note that I've avoided Super Bowl matchups (since these tend to produce one-hit-wonder matchups at a much higher rate) but you can feel free to suggest them in the comments.

2020.01.22 06:08 displacedindavis A history of left-handed QBs in the NFL

Today's topic will highlight one of the greatest novelties of football: the left-handed QB.
Several hundreds of QBs have played a game in the NFL, but very, very, very few of them have been left-handed. True, that number will likely increase by 2 after Tua Tagovailoa and Alex Hornibrook get drafted to the NFL, but that's still bread crumbs compared to their right-handed counterparts. The last season a left-handed QB played a game was in 2015. We'll get to that guy later.
Wikipedia only lists 20 left-handed QBs that have ever played an NFL game in the Super Bowl era, though they acknowledge that their list is incomplete (I mean, there's no way they can possibly go through all the QBs that have played just one NFL game). I highly doubt the actual number is significantly higher than 20, so I'll use that as a benchmark.
Without further ado, I thought we'd take this post to honor a few southpaws that have played in the NFL in the Super Bowl era (HoFs are italicized in addition to being bolded, *Super Bowl-winning QB):

2019.11.21 14:50 OziHedgie Still looking for a pet? I gotcha covered :D

...okay...so...I *really* have a LOT OF TIME on my hands whilst on leave XD
I'm still looking for a 6th bby, but if you haven't yet filled that slot on a main or on your side accounts, I hope this list helps ya out some =D
EDIT: Am adding to this list every couple of days as I continue my search for my own 6th bby :)Most of the ones I'm listing with petpets have had them for well over 2500+ days, which I'm using as a guide to how long the pet's been stuck in the pound; it's probably not accurate, but that's how my search parameters are set.
Feel free to comment if you've adopted any of the ones listed, or have found your own decently named babies on your searches; I'll update the main post where I can :D
EDIT 2: I'm dividing them into categories to make it easier for people to search...and because of my OCD [TOTAL WIP]
EDIT 3: ...have culled the lowercase/bad pet names & removed pets already adopted.
EDIT 4: Am starting to wish I'd taken notes of dates to begin with, lol...

2019.11.15 20:02 Rsubs33 [Game Preview] Week 11 - Philadelphia Eagles(5-4) vs. New England Patriots (8-1)

Philadelphia Eagles (5-4) vs New England Patriots(8-1)
The last two Super Bowl Champions face off in a rematch of Super Bowl LII. It is the first time the two teams will meet since the Eagles defeated New England in Minneapolis 41-33. However it is the Patriots who are the defending champs after winning Super Bowl LIII last season. The Patriots come to the Linc following their first loss of the season at the hands of the Ravens in week 9. Both teams look much different than last time they faced off, as this will be the first time Carson Wentz takes on Brady and Belichick. It will be no easy task for Wentz has he faces off against the league’s top rated pass defense and will do it without his top two WRs in Desean Jackson and Alshon Jeffrey also looks to miss the contest. Look for the Eagles to establish the run early with Jordan Howard and rookie Miles Sanders. The Eagles will also look to get help from some familiar faces they brought back this week in WR Jordan Matthews and RB Jay Ajayi. Ajayi was brought into to replace the injured Darren Sproles who went on the IR Friday with a torn hip flexor. On the other side of the ball the Eagles struggling pass defense got back on track the last two weeks beating up Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky, but they will face a whole nother animal this week when future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady comes to town. Brady torched the Eagles secondary in Super Bowl LII to the tune of 505 yards, 3 TDs and no touchdowns. The Eagles secondary will have to be better this week if the Eagles hope to come out with a win. They will look for help from the pass rush which has come alive of late with 7 sacks in their last two games. They need need to get pressure on Brady and force him to dump it down and prevent the big play, something the Eagles have struggled with this season. If the Eagles can control the tempo and use the running game to give Tom Brady off the field, they have a shot to hand the Patriots their second loss of the season.

Eagles 41 - Patriots 33
In a record-setting shootout between backup QB Foles and five-time champ Brady of the favored Patriots, it was the Eagles who came out victorious. The combined 1,151 yards were the most in any modern NFL game. The game started slow the the teams trading field goals on their opening drives before Fole connected with Jeffrey on a 36 yard TD pass to give the Eagles the 10-7 lead. The Eagles extended the lead after a 4th down stand where they drove down the field and scored on a 21 yard run. The Patriots answered with a FG and a James White TD run following a Nick Foles INT to cut the lead to 15-12 with just over 2 minutes to go in the half. The Eagles marched down the field and went for it on 4th and 1 from one yard line using the now famous Philly Special where Trey Burton hit Nick Foles in the Endzone to give the Eagles a 22-12 lead heading into halftime. The two teams traded scores following half time with the Patriots cutting the lead to one point midway through the 4th on a Gronkowski TD reception. However the Eagles responding with a 7 minute TD drive of their own that ending in a Zach Ertz TD reception. After failing to convert a 2 point conversion. The Patriots got the ball back and Brady looked primed to launch a comeback, but on the second play of the drive he was strip sacked by Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett recovered. The Eagles took an additional minute off the clock before a 46 yard Jake Elliott FG sealed it for the Eagles. Brady got another shot with a minute left in the game, but with no timeouts time wasn’t on his side as the Eagles hung on to give them their first Super Bowl Championship.

Recap from Last Week 9’s Games.
Eagles
Video
The Eagles defense suffocated the Mitch Trubisky led Bears holding them to just 9 yards in the first half, where the Bears trailed 19-0 heading into halftime. The Bears went three-and-out on their first five possessions, gaining minus-10 yards. They didn't get a first down until the final minute of the first half. David Montgomery got the game close in the 4th quarter with a pair of 1 yard touchdown runs. But Philadelphia put it away with 16-play, 69-yard drive capped by Jake Elliott's 38-yard field goal. Wentz completed all four of his third-down passes on the drive for first downs, and the Eagles held the ball for 8:14. The Bears muffed the kick on the ensuing kick and the Eagles recovered to run out the clock and give them the win.
*Patriots
Video From the start of the game the Patriots defense struggled to contain the elusive Lamar Jackson. Jackson and the Ravens jumped out to an early 17-0 lead. The Ravens let the Patriots back into the game after shooting themselves in the foot with a muffed punt that led to an easy Patriots TD. And a Ingram fumble led to an easy FG for Nick Folk and the Ravens took only a 17 point lead into the half. The Patriots looked to be marching down the field in the 3rd before Julien Edleman was stripped and Marlon Humphrey returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. The two teams traded touchdowns before a Tom Brady INT and a methodical 9:35 drive by Baltimore led to another TD to seal the game and end New England’s 13 game winning streak dating back to last season.

Stats to Know
An Odd Year for Brady and Play Action Passing
Historically, Tom “Can’t-Catch-a-Wide-Open-Pass-When-It-Counts” Brady has been near tops in the league in both percentage of dropbacks in Play Action and in Play Action Passer Rating. In 2019, those numbers are down, however, as Brady is 19th in PA % (25.9%) down from 4th at 31.4% last season. While the PA % is down this year from last, it’s still above many previous seasons; it’s just that more teams are employing Play Action at a high frequency, this season. Additionally, typically we see good teams (QBs) have a higher Passer Rating in Play Action than not. Brady is typically not unique in that regard...except this season his PA Passer Rating is only 3.1 points higher than non-PA Passer Rating (95.4 & 92.3) The non-PA Passer Rating is good for 14th, while the PA Passer Rating is good for 27th.
Matchups to Watch
Patriots Secondary vs Eagles Passing Attack
The Patriots and Eagles enter this contest coming off a bye. Prior to the bye, the Patriots defense has been playing at close to historical level per DVOA. It is an incredibly diverse defense that can cover and rush the passer at an elite level. Their defense forces a lot of turnovers and seems to score with more efficiency than some NFL offenses. The Patriots are coming off a loss after playing their first real team of the season; even though Baltimore was able to find success against the Patriots vaunted defense, it is still an incredibly talented unit. The Eagles passing offense has been woefully inept for most of the season forcing them to essentially be a run first team like last year’s Patriots… but without the defense. The Eagles will enter the game with a sorry ass receiving core that could be missing their top target in Alshon Jeffrey. It’s been stunning to watch Agholor regress from the consistently poor play we’ve gotten from him but it goes to show it is possible to hit new lows. Mack Hollins is booty cheeks and JJAW can’t even see the field. The Eagles were wise to re-sign Jordan Matthews, but he’s not the kind of player that can fix this unit. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert are playing very well but it’s hard to have a passing offense run through tight ends. The Eagles will need their big men to show up as well as have Miles Sanders continue to be a dynamic receiver in space out of the backfield. Opposite them will be Stephon Gilmore – the best CB in the NFL – and a complete secondary that can take away good passing offenses. I would expect the Patriots to take away Ertz and Goedert, forcing the WRs to step up which they likely can’t. The Eagles are more than capable of winning this game but this matchup presents a significant challenge for an already questionable air attack.
Patriots Defensive Front vs Eagles Offensive Line
As previously mentioned, the Eagles are a run first team out of necessity. They are able to function this way due to their terrific offensive line, coaching, and run game diversity. Jordan Howard has played really well for the Eagles when they need a back to create out of structure. While Miles Sanders has struggled as a runner in his early career, he has been showing incremental progress as he gains more experience at the position. This offensive line gets a second crack at a Belichick defense, two years removed from dominating their defensive front in Super Bowl 52. This isn’t the same Patriots defense we saw in February 2008; that Patriots defense finished 31st in DVOA. The Patriots have a lot of good athletes that are disciplined and well-coached. This is a strength vs strength matchup that the Eagles need to win. Both organizations value high-level trench play since they can help control the game. Ideally, the Eagles would possess a better passing attack. Maybe that passing attack will be better after the bye week but no one should count on that at the moment. For now, Philadelphia needs to keep finding success with the diverse and dominating rushing attack to keep the offense on schedule against a very dangerous defense.
Patriots Passing Attack vs Eagles Secondary
The last two games have yielded good results for the Eagles defense; by reading the box scores, you be convinced that the Eagles defense has been completely fixed and they’ll have nothing to worry about. When you study the tape of these two games, you’ll realize the Eagles have been gifted by their opponents lack of real QBs. Tom Brady hasn’t been an electric passer this year nor do the Patriots run up the score like they have during other years in their dynasty with strong offensive performances. However, like the defense, this is a smart, well-coached offense that can take advantage of a defenses weakness. It’s obvious to everyone that even with the return of their injured CBs, the Eagles secondary is still a piece of work. Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby have stopped some of the bleeding but they are just lipstick on a pig. Philly’s LBs are still a bit of a liability, especially in the absence of Nigel Bradham, and will likely be exploited. Malcolm Jenkins has had a down year in coverage. Jim Schwartz, while a good DC, still has coverage assignments for his players at times that put them in lose/lose situations. The Patriots offense, led by Tom Brady, will see and exploit the weaknesses you have on your team. The Eagles are bad against play action – what do you think we’ll see? Defending screens are a problem… enter James White. Double moves? You got it. The defense has coverage breakdowns consistently against the Bills and Bears, they were just incapable of taking advantage of that. They no longer have the benefit of playing cupcake QBs. The Eagles offense isn’t built to run up the score quickly and are up against a top defense. Philadelphia’s defense needs to rise to the occasion and keep the Patriots off the scoreboard.

2019.11.01 19:04 Rsubs33 [Game Preview] Week 9 - Philadelphia Eagles(4-4) vs. Chicago Bears (3-4)

Philadelphia Eagles (4-4) vs Chicago Bears(3-4)
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of Lincoln Financial Field Sunday after salvaging one win on their 3 game road trip taking care of business against the Buffalo Bills last week. They welcome the Chicago Bears to town in a rematch of last years NFC wildcard round and the second matchup of the Battle of Reid’s Bastards. where the Eagles squeaked out a win after the double doink missed field goal by Cody Parkey. The Eagles offense has struggled this season, but found a rhythm last week against a tough Bills defense by pounded it on the ground. They will need to do the same this week to slow out the always disruptive Khalil Mack. Part of that ground attack will be former Bear Jordan Howard who will look for some revenge on his former team after he was traded to Philadelphia in the offseason. In the passing game, the Eagles may get a boost with the return of the speedy Desaen Jackson who hasn’t played since week 1 where he put up 152 yards and 2 TDs in the season opener. Jackson was a limited participant this week, and is listed as questionable, but if he returns to the lineup it will be an immediate upgrade in the receiving corp giving Wentz a speedy deep threat and a guy with excellent hands who is always dangerous in space. On the defensive side, the Eagles will try to limit the Bears ground game and force Mitchell Trubkisky to beat him with his arm, something he has struggled with this season. Cox and Graham seemed to find their grove last week against the Bills and new Eagle Genard Avery will look to make and impact as well. Avonte Maddox will also resume his duties in the slot after missing the last three games with a neck injury. If the Eagles can get their offense going and get some turnovers on defense it should lead to an Eagle victory at the Linc.

The scoring went silent until a Nick Foles INT set up a FG for the Bears to bring the score to a tie, the Bears added another field to take the Bears into halftime up 6-3. The Eagles took the lead on their first possession of the second half with a Dallas Goedert TD before the Bears answered with a TD and FG of their own to take a 15-10 lead. The Philadelphia Eagles needed help to get into the playoffs, and Chicago provided it. The Eagles repaid them by knocking off the number defense for the second year in a row in the playoffs to send the Bears home. Foles lead the Eagles offense down field and scored a Golden Tate TD with under a minute to go in the game. The Bears marched down the field with a chance to answer and come away with the win on a last second field. Pederson iced Parkey on his first attempt when he lined up for his second shot. He lined up and kicked it with a slightly low trajectory, just low enough for the pinky of Trayvon Hester alter the flight and cause a double doink off the upright and crossbar. The Philadelphia Eagles needed help to get into the playoffs, and Chicago provided it. The Eagles repaid them by sending them home in the wildcard round as Pederson came out victorious in the Battle of Reid’s bastards.

Recap from Last Week’s Games.
Eagles
Video Have spending a week churning on 37-10 loss to the Cowboys, the Eagles responded with a 31-13 win over the Bills. The Eagles defense set the tone and the Eagles pounded the ball on the ground on the windy New York afternoon. The Eagles took control by scoring touchdowns 83 seconds apart spanning halftime to build a 17-7 lead. Graham's forced fumble of quarterback Josh Allen at Buffalo's 24 led to Carson Wentz hitting Dallas Goedert for a 5-yard touchdown catch with 25 seconds left in the second quarter. On the second snap from scrimmage in the third quarter, Sanders followed Howard's block of linebacker Matt Milano in bursting up the left sideline. The second-round draft pick celebrated his touchdown by leaping into a group of Eagles fans in the northeast corner of the endzone's stands. After the Bills answered with a Devin Singletary score on a 28-yard catch on Buffalo's next possession, the Eagles responded with Wentz overseeing a six-play, 68-yard touchdown drive capped by Boston Scott's 4-yard touchdown run. The Eagles finished with 218 yards on the ground their highest total in a game since 2014.
Bears
Video Three straight punts preceded Piñeiro's 33-yard field goal hitting the right upright. On the Chargers' ensuing drive, Fuller intercepted Philip Rivers and returned it to the Chargers' four-yard line, but the offense struggled to gain a yard, leading to Piñeiro making a 27-yard kick. Chicago reached Los Angeles' nine-yard line but only reached their seven; Piñeiro kicked a 25-yard field goal. The Chargers answered with a four-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Melvin Gordon's four-yard touchdown run. Down by one, the Bears reached the Chargers' five-yard line with help from Montgomery's 55-yard run, but further red zone woes persisted, leading to Piñeiro giving his team the 9–7 lead on a 19-yard kick. To start the second half, the Bears mounted an 11-play, 75-yard series that included eight rushes as Montgomery recorded a four-yard score. Chase McLaughlin made a 20-yard field goal to end the third quarter. Early in the final period, Trubisky was intercepted by Casey Hayward, but McLaughlin's 42-yard kick was wide right; the Chargers regained possession on the next series after Trubisky lost a fumble on his 26-yard line. The takeaway led to Rivers' go-ahead score to Austin Ekeler. After two drives ending with punts, the Bears got the ball back on their 35 with 1:33 remaining in the game. Although Trubisky led the Bears to the Chargers' 21, Nagy called to kneel to run down the clock and set up Piñeiro's potential game-winning 41-yard kick. The kick went wide left as time expired,] marking the Bears' first three-game losing streak under Nagy.

Stats to Know
Bears’ Play Action Passing
In 2019, Mitchell Trubisky is averaging a higher Yards Per Attempt and slightly higher Completion % via Play Action than not (6.0 vs. 5.5 & 65.6% vs. 64.4%). Trubisky is only using Play Action 16.7% of dropbacks, which is 2nd-lowest of all QBs. It’s kind-of tough to threaten a team with Play Action when your running game is playing so relatively poorly (no Bears RB is better than 71st in RB Yards After Contact or 62nd in Yards Per Attempt. The best a Bears RB fares in overall Offensive PFF Grade is 58th.
Matchups to Watch
Bears Defensive Line vs Eagles Offensive Line… or Andre Dillard
Everyone who covers the Eagles is quick to point out the likely matchup between Khalil Mack and Andre Dillard for good reason. While the Bears will move Mack all over the defensive front, he will likely get the bulk of his snaps across from the Eagles rookie tackle. Dillard has shown steady improvement since taking over for the injured Jason Peters. He is a great athlete at the position and moves very well for a man his size. Additionally, he’s pretty good in the run game despite the common criticism of him in that area in the pre-draft process. One area of his game that Dillard must improve, which will take his game to greater heights, his is ability to handle power rushes and to anchor. Right now, that ability is somewhat limited, likely due to his college coaching and competition. In the PAC-12, Dillard didn’t face the quality of rushers a lot of other prospects get to face in the Power 5 conferences; additionally, he wasn’t asked to do a variety of pass blocking sets in the scheme Washington State runs. Khalil Mack makes life difficult for All-Pro Offensive Linemen putting Dillard under the microscope on Sunday. Mack isn’t the only good player on this defensive front. The Eagles will catch a break with stud IDL Akiem Hicks on IR but the Bears still have Eddie Goldman with other effective rotational linemen behind him. Leonard Floyd has also emerged as a quality EDGE opposite Mack. Chuck Pagano isn’t afraid to bring the athletic linebackers they have on blitzes either. While this Bears defense isn’t producing turnovers at the insane rate they did last year, this is still a stout defensive front that has kept the team in games. They haven’t let the team down this year. This is a significant matchup for the Eagles given the quality of the opposition and their own offensive struggles. Can Dillard quickly rise to the occasion? How do the Eagles game plan, or alter what they’ve done, to account for Mack?
Bears Defense vs. Eagles Newly Dated Offensive Game Plan
Listen, running 40 times per game and averaging 5 YPC in the process is great to watch since we get to see the soul taken from our opponent. This happened last week against the Bills, especially on the 8 minute drive the Eagles had to effectively end the game. The issue with the philosophy is it’s normally an inefficient and ineffective way to win football games. Since the Eagles Super Bowl season, they have become more run oriented, with that shift occurring sharply this year. Part of the reason is due to injury; Desean Jackson figured to be a large part of the Eagles attack and can’t when he is injured. Another reason is due to players underperforming expectations. Alshon Jeffery is a solid receiver, but Nelson Agholor has remained the general liability he’s always been while somehow regressing and Mack Hollins is basically useless. Don’t even get my started with whatever is going on with JJAW. The Eagles are getting nothing from their WRs and the offensive coaching staff isn’t doing a good enough job scheming an offensive attack while suffering from roster construction issues. The Eagles are currently the 17th best offense by DVOA – 19th rushing, 14th passing. That’s not going to get it done for this team. The Eagles problems from 2018 have continued into 2019 while getting slightly worse. This is a Bears defense that is 7th in DVOA. This is a perfectly winnable game for the Eagles but their offensive struggles could keep this game too close for comfort. This is a long term problem for the Eagles this season and one that could have ramifications Sunday. Against a tough Bills defense, on the road, and in poor weather conditions, the coaches had a good game plan on offense that lead to the win. That’s not something the Eagles have consistently had this year. Part of the turnaround the Eagles need to have rests on the offenses ability to improve; improving the struggling passing game would work wonders for this team. The Eagles will likely have Desean Jackson back on Sunday. How effective he’ll be and what that means for the Eagles offense is huge. Ultimately, it’s a coaching and player execution problem above all else. Wentz hasn’t been the problem this year, which will aid in the turn around.
Bears Offensive Line vs Eagles Defensive Front
It has been slow-going for the Eagles defensive front on the season but it appears that this unit is starting to become a more effective group. The Bears offensive line is decent but isn’t playing at the level it has previously. Furthermore, their best offensive lineman, Kyle Long, is done for the season with injury. Fletcher Cox is fresh off a strong performance and appears to be rounding into form; the effectiveness of the Eagles pass rush rests on Cox given his dynamic ability. Brandon Graham also appears to be returning to a move effective form after notching a sack and forcing a key fumble last week in Buffalo. Derek Barnett has put together consecutive good performances which the Eagles really need. Prior to the trade deadline, the Eagles added Genard Avery via trade with the Browns. While Avery has been a healthy scratch this season, his play last year has shown him to be a more effective day 3 rusher than Shareef Miller has been for the Eagles in 2019 – not great. Avery is a pure pass rusher, though undersized. In Gregg Williams scheme, Avery was a good rotational rusher, which is where he thrives. Avery was a bit miscast under Steve Wilks this season since Avery isn’t effective dropping into coverage and playing in space. I don’t understand why coaches like Wilks don’t adapt their scheme to fit their personnel but what do I know? Either way, the Eagles still have issues in pass coverage. What is the best way to hide that? That’s right, pass rush. The Eagles still have a good defensive line that is slowly getting better each week. They face a QB that is a mess all around and an offensive line that isn’t as good as it needs to be to make up the difference. Pressure can force QBs into making mistakes; this is huge against Trubisky, who makes mistakes when he isn’t under pressure.
Bears Passing Offense vs Eagles Passing Defense
For the second consecutive week, the Eagles will face a QB that is a better RB than he is QB. The Eagles secondary has made fewer mistakes with the return of the swag-tastic Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby but “fewer” is deceiving. Simply put, the Eagles are up against another middling to bad offense and a passing attack this week that they need to take advantage of. The biggest issue they face this week are the Bears receiving options. Allen Robinson is a very good receiver and easily the best receiver Philly has seen since Amari Cooper. Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, and Tarik Cohen are all playmakers in their own right. This is a deeper group of weapons the Bears have to work with than Josh Allen has. It’s just the QB is considerably worse with an offensive scheme that has regressed mightily. The Bears offense is ranked 28th by DVOA – 21st passing, 27th rushing – and it shows when you watch them. Allen Robinson is really the only player Trubisky can seem to get the ball to and he regularly struggles with that. The Eagles secondary was “better” against the Bills… but not really. Allen had issues locating open receivers for various reasons (pressure, general inability) that left points on the field for their offense. The Eagles still haven’t cleaned up a lot of the mistakes that regularly plague them. Their opponent this week may afford them the opportunity to skirt disaster again but all it takes is one mistake to cost them the game. The Eagles aren’t in a position to give up games against teams they should beat so every possession matters. The defense, while struggling, should be able to handle what the Bears will throw their way. More consistent execution from the players and coaches would work wonders here. Keep the Bears in a hole – force their offense to chase. Play and coach smart.

2019.10.10 20:28 vinj4 The worst QB rating in a win, and the best QB rating in a loss, for every team (2010-2019)

So I was inspired by a reply from Baldy on the AMA yesterday to see how well a QB's passer rating in a game correlates with getting a win. This is what I found from 2010 to 2019. As you might guess, win percentage and passer rating are pretty well correlated. But the thing that interested me most is the fact that a few QBs won the game with rating below 40, and some lost with a rating above 120. Here is the list of the worst single-game passer ratings in a win and the best single-game passer ratings for a loss, from 2010 to 2019 (min. 15 attempts).

FAST FACTS

From PRB
  • The Broncos have won 11 of the last 15 regular-season meetings in the series, after the Chargers had gone 9-2 versus Denver between 2006 and 2011. In 2018, the teams split two sloppy contests that produced a total of 10 turnovers, 38 penalties and seven fumbles.
  • Denver has dropped eight straight games dating back to last December; a loss on Sunday would mark just the third time the Broncos have ever lost as many as nine straight contests. The team is also in danger of starting a season 0-5 for the first time in its 60-year existence.
  • Von Miller became the sixth-fastest player to reach 100 career regular-season sacks with his 25th career multi-sack game vs. Jaguars
  • Emmanuel Sanders moved past Lionel Taylor for fourth on the team’s all-time 100-yard receiving games list
  • Courtland Sutton became the fourth Bronco to reach 1,000 career receiving yards by his 20th game

2019.06.28 08:31 Clownier An Honest Assessment of the Leagues Top Teams

Let me preface this by saying, I am a diehard Cowboys fan. I am also a diehard NFL fan. I haven't missed a single NFL game in 24 years. With that said, the following is just my opinion and not worth anything more or less than the analysts that say stupid things during the offseason to create drama and headlines.

Top 6 in order. I've only done 6 because in my opinion we are #6. I can do a full Power Rankings if this receives positive feedback.

  1. New Orleans Saints
The Saints are the premier team in the league this year. They beat tough competition all year long. Lest we forget that if not for the most egregious missed call in NFC Championship history the Saints would likely be entering the season as the reigning champions. The Saints have an incredible RB that would start on 28+ other teams (Kamara). The defense is young but talented. They won't be as much of a liability this year as they were last year. Let's also remember that they've got Drew Brees at the helm who typically throws for a guaranteed 5000 yards/season.
2) Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs have the best young QB in the league. The Chiefs are going to be good for many years to come. Certainly Mahomes won't throw for a record setting TD amount next year but he will still be a formidable QB. The Chiefs have serious weaponry. Although the loss of Kareem Hunt certainly hurt their squad they've still got a really talented defense and an offense that consists of the best receiving/tight end corps in the league.
3) The New England Patriots
Tom Brady plays for this team. This is probably all that needs to be said. Bill Belichek demonstrated in the Super Bowl that he is one of the best coaches to ever do it. A lot of the Rams offensive defficiencies could have stemmed from a 24 year old kid realizing he's playing Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, however, holding the Rams to 3 points wasn't easy. Sony Michel is one of the most talented young RBs in the league, he will show this throughout the season. Everyone knows Tom Brady could pick 4 guys out of the parking lot to compose his receiving corps and score 24+ a game.
4) Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are the best team in Los Angeles right now. Their defense is incredible and their offense has been electric since Rivers has been their QB. Rivers will find a way to keep his team competitive in any game. Keenan Allen is disruptive, Melvin Gordon is a huge threat that requires defenses to stack the box against, and Rivers has 2 deep threats on the outside. Keep in mind on the defensive side of the ball LAC has 2 of the premier players in the league at their position. Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram.
5) Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are here for no other reason than what they accomplished last year. The Los Angeles Rams were tremendous on offense. The Rams dealt with difficult injuries to their receiving corps and star running back throughout the season and postseason. It seemed that no matter who went down the Rams would be effective. The Rams lost a few key pieces this offseason. People are really excited about Sean McVay and how successful he is as a young coach. McVay was severely outcoached in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl FELT like a young QB and young head coach squaring up against a dynasty from the opening whistle. My confidence in this team is low. The Rams have 4 games per year against Arizona and San Fransisco. At present date the NFC West is not a competitive division.
6) Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are the 6th best team in the NFL. The ceiling is much higher for this team but the weight required to lift this ceiling lies squarely on the shoulders of Dak Prescott. Dak needs to improve 2 things during the offseason to make this team a 12-14 win team. DISCLAIMER: I'm not saying Dak is a bad QB, I'm just saying the following needs to be improved.
  1. Don't miss the deep ball. Dak missed a wide open Michael Gallup striding down the sidelines easily 5 times this season. These are gamebreaking plays that need to hit home for the Cowboys to be dominant.
  2. Fix that internal clock. You can't hold onto the ball for too long. Tony Romo struggled with this early in his career as well and it eventually clicked. A 0 yards play is much better than a fumble recovery for a TD.
The defense demonstrated dominance throughout the latter half of the season last year. The LB corps is unmatched across the league. Byron Jones is quite possibly the best CB in the league. Chidobe is good, and Jeff Heath is the most randomly clutch player in NFL history. Jeff Heath can't cover a deep zone but if the season is on the line he'll somehow intercept the ball. Zeke will be Zeke but the ceiling for this team lies with Dak Prescott.
